The City’s goal is to provide a safe, convenient, efficient, continuous, and aesthetically pleasing transportation environment that is conducive to cycling and walking. The City’s Bicycle & Pedestrian program seeks to facilitate the use of these alternative modes of transportation by focusing on infrastructure enhancements, safety and outreach.

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center has designated the City of Gainesville a bronze level Walk Friendly Community for its walkability initiatives and programs. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration and FedEx, Walk Friendly Communities is a national program aimed at recognizing communities for their commitment to pedestrian safety. The City of Gainesville is also designated as a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists, demonstrating its commitment to supporting cycling by improving conditions and creating opportunities. "Click Here" for community highlights. |

- Target 1 mile of new sidewalks and trails every year
- Signalized intersections in Gainesville have pedestrian countdown signals to enhance safety at crossings by alerting pedestrians of the time remaining to complete the crossing.
